Me mate said that the best way to give up smoking is the cold turkey method. Well, I’m on me third turkey and all I’ve got is a severe case
of indigestion and I want a tab more than ever… Tobacco smoking is the single biggest cause of preventable death
and disease in the North-East, (or anywhere else for that matter)
and is responsible for a host of diseases, including cancers of the lung, larynx and tongue, bronchitis, emphysema, heart disease and stroke. Around 15 people die every day in the North East due to smoking.
That’s nearly 5,500 a year, equivalent in population size to the whole
of Whitburn in South Tyneside or Rowlands Gill in Gateshead. However 70% of smokers say they would like to quit but that they find
it difficult as nicotine addition can be very powerful. What’s in a cigarette? – it isn’t only the nicotine that kills smokers, it’s the lethal cocktail of over 4,000 other chemicals contained in tobacco smoke including tar, carbon monoxide, cyanide, acetone and formaldehyde to name a few. Help to quit - the good news is that for the 70% of people who want to
quit, there is excellent help available from the free NHS Stop Smoking Services. In the North-East we have some of the best performing services in the country. You can find the address of your local service by calling the
NHS Smoking Helpline on 0800 169 0 169. And remember, any concerns about giving up or smoking related illness
– your GP is there to help. Y’ know it makes sense man! |
